About

Who writes this portal and how we work with the repertoire.

What this portal is

ClassicalTest is a listening portal. Its purpose is to make the concert repertoire easier to approach: which composers wrote what, how a piece is put together, what the instruments are doing and which words listeners use to describe what they hear. The site is written for an interested listener, not for a conservatoire examination.

How we choose material

We work from the standard concert repertoire and from well-documented musical history. Where a work exists in several versions or completions, we say so rather than presenting one version as the only truth. We do not publish invented dates, opus numbers, chart positions or statistics, and we do not rank recordings.

How to use the site

  • Start with a composer profile, then take one familiar work from the Masterworks section.
  • Use the Listening Guides when a piece feels long and you lose your place.
  • Keep the Theory & Forms pages open as a glossary while you listen.
  • Finish with a quiz to check which details actually stayed with you.

Language

Titles are given in their original language, with a short English gloss, because that is how you will encounter them on a concert programme or a recording cover.

How to use this portal. Pick a composer or a single work, listen once without reading, then come back to the guide and listen again. Music rewards the second hearing far more than the first, and the vocabulary you pick up here is meant to make that second hearing sharper.
